Artistic Exploration with Illustator Oliver Wetter of Fantasio Fine Arts

Since 2008 Oliver Wetter has worked as a freelance illustrator specializing in cover art for editorials, book covers, magazines, and concept and genre art, creating mainly figure and portrait illustrations.

He was educated at the arts center Ibkk in Bochum, Germany, where he received a degree in airbrush design. There Oliver studied under Roland Kuck, an internationally known artist, who specializes in illustration and airbrush art, with an emphasis on portrait painting.

Oliver Wetter's artistic approach is to mix the common with the uncommon and digital with traditional, and to experiment within those four elements. Over time, he has broadened his range of expertise into other artistic disciplines such as photography, sculpture and digital post-production.

Some of Oliver's artistic influences are Gerald Brom, Todd Lockwood, John Jude Palencar, Don Dos Santos, Michael Parkes, Hajime Sorayama, Ashley Wood and John Foster.

Oliver is currently working on a personal series titled, The Trans-genetic Meta-human, realistic portraits of mutants, that look like genetic experiments such as - humans combined with plants, animals, or even machines.

In another series titled, Fantasio Girls, he pays tribute to different style pinup artists utilizing various techniques to better himself as a digital painter.

Oliver feels, "There is no art without practice, one should practice pure exploration into the deep boundaries of the mind to redefine the possible."

Laura Wood is an emerging illustrator currently living in Melbourne. She was born and raised in Italy and at the age of 24, after completing a bachelors degree in Cinema and Multimedia, she decided to follow the little voice in her head and move to Australia. Soon after relocating, Laura started dedicating all her energy to illustration. She is currently attending NMIT to pursue a degree in illustration.

Catarina Garcia is a young artist from Lisbon, Portugal. From the beginning, her work has always featured figure drawing as a starting point. Her interest in drawing is a focus in her portrait work and paintings, where composition is of singular importance. Her most recent paintings belong to a universe where dreams and imagination meet, creating stories from imagery.

Catarina is currently finishing a Masters in Drawing at the Fine Arts Faculty of Lisbon, where, in 2008, she earned a degree in Fine Arts Painting. Her studies took a specialization in printmaking. In 2007/08, she was awarded a Erasmus Scholarship at the Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti, in Turin, Italy.

The 13th Annual Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Winter Conference will be held January 27th-29th at the Hyatt Regency Grand Central in New York City. There will be stellar keynotes, exciting panels and genre workshops with agents, editors and art directors. Along with their Writer and Illustrator Intensives, SCBWI is also offering a third intensive which is Marketing for Writers. All three have limited capacity so make sure you sign up quickly once registration opens. The Intensives will take place on January 27th as will the portfolio showcase which is open to all who register for the Illustrator Intensive.

In response to overwhelming demand, SCBWI will be having a gala cocktail reception for all on Saturday night for shmoozing, eating, drinking and just plain partying.

Who are these moody 20-somethings lazing around an icy North American wilderness, and why do I find them so fascinating?

The truly odd and delicate paintings of Toronto-based artist Kris Knight are a decidedly strange brew: vague David Lynchian narratives, evocative teenage poutiness, boo!-inducing landscapes, aesexual things that go bump in the night—heck!—even cable-knit sweaters. But as the first guy to pour maple syrup on his breakfast links came to find out, weird combos are often, surprisingly or not, the most interesting of all. Kris' paintings have that "syrup on sausage for the first time" effect.

So before we take in any more of Knight's maple leaf mysteries, be sure to follow the man's wonderful Flickr stream. See you at the abandoned cabin!

Artist Kristina Nelson - Changing the Way We See Art... And Something Else

Artist Kristina Nelson has spent years - many hundreds of hours - honing her skills as a crayon artist.

Wait a minute!

Yes, go ahead. Read that first line again.

Kristina Nelson has created the art featured here - and numerous other pieces - using the same simple, ordinary crayons that children use in their coloring books. But as you can clearly see, there is nothing simple nor ordinary about what Kristina creates with this medium.

Kristina earned a degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She then spent a year studying under Don Marco, one of the few and foremost crayon artists in the world, and later, set off to open her own studio.

In addition to selling prints of her crayon art, Kristina also accepts commissions. In the photos shown above you can see Kristina working in her studio on a commissioned crayon portrait of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Kristina's artwork is inspiring on multiple levels - the obvious is the demonstrated skill - another is ingenuity. It takes an inventive, resourceful, and extremely patient individual to transform a simple yet difficult medium such as crayons into something that could be perceived as having been created with the finest quality oils. You know what it's like when you color with crayon in different directions. It looks as if a madman was turned loose on an innocent sheet of paper. When you look at Kristina's art, it's as if she has tamed a wild horse - broken the beast of its chaotic, unpredictable nature, enabling it to become a gentle creature one can journey freely with and connect with emotionally.

When you look at a field of dandelions do you disregard them as nothing but weeds and move on, or do you see a field of beautiful, yellow flowers and stop to take in their beauty? A moment taken to pause today can change many years that follow.

How many of us have seen crayons as that field of beautiful, yellow flowers?
